If you’ve ever dreamed of family portraits that look like they belong in a gallery — dramatic, emotional, and completely unlike anything your friends have on their walls — then Boneyard Beach is the location you’ve been searching for.
Tucked inside Big Talbot Island State Park, just 40 minutes from downtown Jacksonville, Boneyard Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Northeast Florida — and for good reason. Ancient, sun-bleached oak and cedar tree skeletons stretch across the shoreline, their twisted branches reaching toward the sky like natural sculptures. When you pair that otherworldly backdrop with the golden glow of a Jacksonville sunset, you get portraits that are nothing short of breathtaking.
As a portrait photographer based in Jacksonville, I’ve photographed families, couples, and individuals at locations all across Northeast Florida. But Boneyard Beach holds a special place in my heart. Here’s everything you need to know about booking a portrait session at this iconic location.
Most people visit Boneyard Beach as a nature destination — hiking the half-mile trail from the Bluffs Scenic Shoreline Picnic Area and snapping phone photos of the driftwood. But as a portrait photographer, I see something different: a natural studio with built-in texture, depth, and drama that no man-made backdrop could ever replicate.
Getting There:
Boneyard Beach is located inside Big Talbot Island State Park at 12157 Heckscher Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32226. There’s a $3 vehicle entrance fee, and the park is open daily from 8 a.m. until sundown. From the parking area at the Bluffs, you’ll walk a packed-sand trail for about half a mile — roughly 10 to 20 minutes depending on your pace.
I always recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the trail walk and bringing a pair of sandals or going barefoot once you hit the sand. The trail can get muddy after rain, so I’ll give you a heads-up if conditions require closed-toe shoes.

The natural palette of Boneyard Beach is all warm neutrals — sandy beiges, silvery whites, and the warm tones of a sunset sky. I recommend families coordinate in:
Avoid neon colors, busy patterns, and large logos. Flowy dresses and linen fabrics photograph beautifully here — the breeze off the Nassau Sound adds gorgeous natural movement to your images.
