Choosing the right location for your engagement photos can make all the difference. Northeast Florida is home to some truly stunning backdrops — from the sun-soaked Atlantic coastline to Spanish moss-draped parks and historic streets. As a Jacksonville engagement photographer, I’ve shot at dozens of locations throughout the area, and these are the spots I love most.
1. Jacksonville Beach – Classic Coastal Beauty
You can’t go wrong with the beach. Jacksonville Beach at sunrise or golden hour produces warm, dreamy light that wraps around couples beautifully. The wide, open shoreline gives us room to move and create a variety of compositions — from sweeping wide shots with the ocean in the background to intimate close-ups in the waves.
2. Treaty Oak Park – Timeless & Magical
One of Jacksonville’s most iconic natural landmarks, Treaty Oak Park is home to a massive, centuries-old live oak tree with sprawling canopy that creates natural, dappled light perfect for portraits. This location photographs beautifully in any season and at any time of day.
3. Cummer Museum Gardens – Romantic & Elegant
The formal gardens along the St. Johns River at the Cummer Museum offer a lush, manicured backdrop with fountains, brick pathways, and river views. This spot is ideal for couples who want something refined and romantic.
4. Amelia Island – Coastal Charm
About 30 minutes north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island offers both beach settings and the charming Victorian downtown of Fernandina Beach. The combination of ocean, marshes, and historic architecture makes for an incredibly versatile shoot location.
5. Ponte Vedra Beach – Upscale Coastal Elegance
For a slightly more upscale coastal feel, Ponte Vedra Beach just south of Jacksonville offers pristine shoreline with natural dunes and fewer crowds than the main Jacksonville beaches.
6. Historic St. Augustine – Old World Romance
An hour south of Jacksonville, America’s oldest city offers cobblestone streets, ancient Spanish architecture, and romantic courtyards. For couples who want something uniquely atmospheric and distinctly Florida, St. Augustine is unmatched.
7. Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens – Lush & Natural
For couples who love nature without the beach, the Jacksonville Arboretum offers trails, meadows, and beautiful natural light filtering through the tree canopy. It’s a lovely alternative for autumn and winter sessions when the light is especially soft.
Tips for Your North Florida Engagement Session
Schedule your session during golden hour (the hour before sunset) for the most flattering, beautiful light. Wear colors that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose outfits that reflect your personalities. And most importantly — relax and have fun! The best engagement photos happen when couples are laughing, moving, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.
